24 Sept 2026River dredging should remain evidence-led and case-specificPosition
“[Speaker: Joe Martin] The Minister agreed that flooding is devastating, but says that dredging was cut back because experts now understand flooding better, because of rules protecting nature, so it's only done on a case-by-case basis where evidence supports it. The relevant committee's own research also said that there's no evidence that less dredging is a major cause of more flooding across Wales. Flooding has come up in several past petitions, and the committee last time flagged it as a key issue for this Senedd.”
